After the Critics and Repairs: Back to the Golden Globes

Too white, too variegated, too opaque: There’s been a lot of criticism of the Golden Globes, and the awards ceremony hasn’t even been shown on TV lately. After the repairs, the Golden Globe Awards are now back.

The host of the show, black comedian Jerrod Carmichael, didn’t talk about it: “I’m running the show here because I’m black.” In his editorial, he talked about the moment he discovered he was supposed to present the Golden Globes. “One moment you’re standing in the kitchen making yourself mint tea, the next you’re the black face of a controversial white organization.”

The most important film awards after the Oscars had neither an audience nor a televised broadcast last year. For example, there was not a single black member of the jury.

Several fixes and changes

“We’ve introduced new guidelines and removed many disputes. We’ve introduced a new confidential hotline complaints procedure,” Helene Hoene, German president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, told NPR ahead of the ceremony. In addition, the jury has been expanded, now being more diverse, international, and female.

Many stars returned this year: Steven Spielberg won two awards for “The Fabelmans.” The movie is the best drama. In addition, Spielberg earned his third directing globe.

What the Golden Globes Didn’t Change: Very long acceptance letters are not desirable. Indian songwriter Chandrabose won in the Best Original Song category and was asked off the stage during his speech by an increasingly loud piano.

In his speech, Colin Farrell thanked his co-star in the movie, Jenny the Donkey. It’s his third Globe this year for Best Comedy, The Banshees of Inisherin. The Irish film was nominated eight times and won three awards, including Best Comedy.

It is about the end of an Irish friendship with a male. It is terminated on one side, and quite clearly.

The chain is also taken into account

Unlike the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes also honor series. “Abbott Elementary” got three ground balls. And The White Lotus is about a horror trip to a luxury hotel: there’s a Golden Globe for best miniseries for that.

But the big winners are probably the Golden Globes themselves: they’re still very much around.
