Because of “gossip” and Qatar’s statements: 1,860 fans attack Michael Kollner

Mannheim / Munich – TSV 1860 imagined the start of the competitive game year 2023 to be very different. After a disappointing performance, the Lions have to concede defeat to promotion rivals SV Waldhof Mannheim 1:3 And they were also fortunate that the defeat could not be greater.

It is their fifth consecutive winless game of the year. Since finishing third at 1. FC Saarbrücken also spoiled their start to the new year with a 3-2 defeat against MSV Duisburg, the difference to the relegation spot is still three points at the moment. However, the coming days are likely to be uncomfortable on Grünwalder Straße.

1860 Kölner fans criticize: “Football players play football, coaches practice”

Also to coach Michael Kollner, who apparently couldn’t lift his team out of the doldrums last fall, despite a nine-week winter break including a swanky training camp in Turkey. Upper Palatinate has long been viewed critically by some fans – and not just because of its team’s performance, as shown on Saturday.

TSV 1860 loses 1:3 in Waldhof-Mannheim.

During the second half, two banners were displayed in the wasted block which directly addressed the coach of the six players. It read: “Wild gibberish and Qatar’s relativity – footballers play football and coaches train.” A clear message to Kollner, who has clearly irked some supporters from his ranks in the past few months.

Köllner has caused criticism from fans with remarks about non-sports topics

If you listen to the scene these weeks, the accusation is brought up again and again that Köllner expresses himself too much on topics outside of sports. Even during the high Corona phase, the 53-year-old has caused some fans to be upset with statements about pandemic policy (“Lauterbach must be stopped”). And the fact that he criticized political decision-makers for arms deliveries to Ukraine didn’t sit well with everyone either.

One of the most recent data that disturbed some in the Curve dates back to November last year. In an interview during his trip to the World Cup in Qatar, he was very nice about the host country and criticized what he saw as highly biased.

TSV 1860: Michael Kollner sometimes lacks tact

“Footballers play football, politicians do politics. You should always remember that,” he said – knowing full well that the championship in the principality was a bright red flag for ultras in Germany.

Of course, all these statements are covered by freedom of expression. Especially in the current situation, a little more sensitivity wouldn’t hurt. Otherwise the mood on Grünwalder Strasse threatened to turn sooner or later, against him as well. The coming days must be uncomfortable enough anyway.
