CAN’T TOUCH THIS: Logan Sevey misses for a big win in Friday’s Chili Bowl qualifiers, plus full scores
Tulsa, Okla. – California’s Logan Sevey got the lead and never looked back, the No. 39 Swindell SpeedLab sailed to Victory Lane Friday night during the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, qualifying night in Tulsa for the 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire.
When asked what it was like to win during the Chili Bowl, Seavey replied, “It’s even more special to do that with Kevin [Swindell]. He’s obviously one of the best racers here ever so having him come back 10 years later after winning his own car and having a lot of speed right away is something.
“For me, it’s been a while, and it’s been over a year since I’ve won a midget race, so to do that with him in particular, it gets my confidence back where it needs to be.”
In Seavey’s fifth start in a premiere night show, the win is the second of his career and Swindell’s first as a car owner. Swindell won the event as a driver from 2010-2013. Logan’s previous win was for Keith Coons in 2019.
Taking the lead from the start, Seavey maintained a fast pace over the race, never giving in to the second place runners. Even with a late red flag on lap 8 when Ethan Mitchell ended up hanging in the fence after making contact while fighting with Justin Grant, the race restarted with Sevy where he left off.
Working through traffic well past the race’s midpoint, Logan was able to go up-and-down on the slower cars while Grant pulled up the cushion. Closing one lap and losing the other was the theme until lap 23 when a series of cautions put the field at rock bottom for the rest of the race.
Coming to Seavey’s white, Grant was unable to pass the No. 39, which finished the win by 0.516 seconds. Grant, at NOS Energy Drink No. 2j, protected for second, with Chase McDermand putting in an impressive race to finish third after starting 15th. Zip Wise crossed fourth, followed by Jason McDougal.
After exchanging slides in the race for second place early on, Ace McCarthy finished in sixth place, followed by Jace Park. In eighth place was Brian Carper (from the 13th place start), followed by Clinton Boyles in ninth place, and Bryant Weidman in tenth place.
Qualifying night at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tulsa featured 76 drivers, bringing the total number of drivers for the event to 365, making it the second-highest in the event’s history, after 2022’s 381.
Saturdays will be presented by General Tire and start at 9:00am CT with P-Main and O-Main Hot Laps. The race will run throughout the day, with opening ceremonies at 6:30pm (CT). Alignments have been posted to http://www.chilibowl.com In addition to the My Race Pass app.
