Public Funeral Service: Family, friends, and distinguished comrades say goodbye

Family members and fellow celebrities such as singer Axl Rose, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, and singer Alanis Morissette traveled to Graceland to pay tribute to Elvis’ famous daughter. Many friends and fans have done the same.

“Thank you all for being here,” said Lisa Marie Presley’s mother, Priscilla Presley. “Our hearts are broken Lisa and we love you all.”

Morissette provided the musical frame with “Rest”, and Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses performed “November Rain”. “Like probably many of you, I am still in shock and will be for a while,” said Rose. “I feel like I should be texting her right now.”

For Presley’s daughter Riley Keough, her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, read a text she wrote thanking her mom — and confirming news of the baby that circulated a few days ago. Lisa Marie Presley became a grandmother shortly before her death.

I wish I could love my daughter as she loved me, as I loved my brother and sisters. Thank you for giving me strength, heart, empathy, courage, sense of humor, morals, temperament, ferocity, and perseverance.

Lisa Marie Presley: Always watch your grave

Lisa Marie Presley grew up looking over the family’s small cemetery. The tombs are located behind Graceland Mansion. She knew that one day she would also be buried here. An oppressive feeling, as described by Lisa in her song “Lights Out” from 2003:

Someone turned off the lights in Memphis. This is where my family is buried and gone. The last time I was there, I noticed a bench to their left, in the fucking back garden.

Lisa Marie found the fact that all of her loved ones would be reunited in death more terrifying than reassuring. In an interview with Playboy she said:

How many people have a family grave behind the house? How many people want to be reminded of their fate, their deaths, every single day?
