Manchester United must offer Tottenham £100m for Harry Kane, says Paul Merson, who praises ‘amazing’ Arsenal | football news
Paul Merson says Manchester United should try to sign Harry Kane as soon as possible if they want to have any chance of winning the Premier League.
Kane’s contract with Tottenham expires at the end of next season and Manchester United – who have a longstanding interest in signing the England captain – are prioritizing signing a new striker in the summer.
In his latest column, Merson explains why Kane’s motivations – both on and off the field – will help decide his future, while also discussing Arsenal’s “stunning” 3-2 win over Manchester UnitedAnd why Chelsea can’t be counted out of the race for the top four.
Man United should offer £100m for Kane
Will Harry Kane go for individual records or will he go for medals? I don’t see him winning anything at Tottenham. He would beat Jimmy Greaves’ goal-scoring record, an exceptional feat. He has a chance to beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League record at Tottenham.
Tottenham was good to Kane at the same time Kane was good to Tottenham. He has kids, he’s married – he has to play where he’s happy. Do you want to change all of that?
He is the best striker in the world. If I were Manchester United, I’d spend £100m on Kane tomorrow. They just paid £80m for Anthony and he won’t score as many goals in 10 years as Kane has scored in a season for Manchester United.
Kane can play until he’s 37 because he doesn’t have to speed – his game isn’t all about speed. He has a brain, he can cut short, find passes and score goals. He has it all.
If Manchester United want to be close to winning a title, they need Kane. Seeing them against Arsenal, it’s still a long way to go.
Kane to Chelsea? This cannot happen. If he comes to Chelsea, he loses his legacy at Tottenham. Tottenham fans are going crazy. For him to go to Chelsea, that would be the next step from going to Arsenal. Chelsea and Tottenham are not getting ahead.
“Arsenal was like a big bad wolf”
I thought Arsenal were amazing against Man United. In the last 20 minutes, the pressure has been steady. They just choked Man United. They chose the right lane and did not panic. They were like a big bad wolf – they blew up the house.
You always think with Manchester City they will score before the end and you get that with Arsenal now. It was exceptional to watch.
I thought Eddie Nketiah would do three, four, five matches. I didn’t think he would do that during that amount of games.
I love him as a scorer. I’ve played with and against Gary Lineker, when the ball was hitting the post, he’d tap it, and people would say, ‘Oh, that was easy’. But no one else was there, which pushed him off the beaten track. This is the thing with bitmap.
He scored in Brighton last weekAnd there was no way (Gabriel) Jesus was recording that. Recorded again on Sunday when there was no way Jesus was recording.
It was great. He’s very lively and has been very good out of the box. He scored big goals in great times.
But when you have those players behind you, you have every chance of scoring goals. They are completely and completely at the top of their games.
Chelsea’s future looks bright
Don’t worry about Chelsea. I think they will be right.
If you look at Graham Potter’s Brighton career, you’d think they were one of the best teams in the league from box to box. When he left there, they started scoring goals, and that might worry you a little bit. But I think he needs time and a season before, to get his players involved and make them play the way he wants to.
I think Chelsea will continue to run a little bit. It has to start somewhere. It was a bit of a nightmare situation, but they have brought in a lot of young players and the future looks bright.
I don’t think it’s fair to bring someone to a club like this and not give them time to prepare for the new season. If he’s in place now this time next season, there are alarm bells ringing.
They are 10 points behind Newcastle, which is the team I think they have to chase. I think Man City, Man United and Arsenal will be in the top four. If you beat Newcastle at home it will be seven points. There is a chance if they can run. There are still a lot of games – people forget we played the World Cup. We’re only halfway there now.
Mykhailo Mudryk looks like a great buy. He looked lively and fast [against Liverpool]. Jurgen Klopp brought James Milner on short notice against him on Saturday. Joao Felix will be back, so I’ve got him and Kai Havertz with Modric. It looks lively.
She looks solid in the back, too, with two clean sheets on the trot. Benoit Badiashile looked fantastic – playing one of the greatest players ever with Thiago Silva. He is still one of the best players now at 38 years old. So that all his heads fell on the people. I can’t speak highly enough of him. If we talk about Virgil van Dijk as a Rolls-Royce, then the Silva is a vintage Rolls-Royce.
