Mike Coulter: “Don’t Compare Your Journey Or Job To Anyone Else”

Mike Coulter He was a working actor long before he shot to fame as the muscular Luke Cage on MTVU (that’s the Marvel Television Universe, of course). He began his long run as Cage on the Marvel/Netflix collaboration in 2015 Jessica Jonesand ended in 2018 after two independent seasons Luke Cage and then in avengers-esque mix The Defenders.

Since 2019, Coulter has played the lead in the supernatural drama Paramount Plus, evil.

On January 13, he will appear on the big screen alongside Gerard Butler in the action thriller airplane. Although the role doesn’t “call him to be as convincing as Cage, Colter stayed fit and still packs plenty of muscle in his 6’3” frame to make the role of an ex-military man turned convincing accused killer in this white-knuckle flick.

However, while filming in Puerto Rico, keeping the weight off and staying hydrated wasn’t so easy.

“It was very hot,” he says. Coulter. “You can’t mess around. Someone is constantly bringing you water, or you’re getting water because you’re sweating a gallon of water a day, so you have to put down two gallons at least.”

Coulter balances decency with acting

“You have to, preemptively, stay fit because when those roles come up, it’s very difficult to just get out of bed and start doing action roles without being in reasonably good shape,” Coulter.

CoulterNow 46 years old, he earned his BA in Theater from the University of South Carolina before heading to Los Angeles to pursue acting full time. “Well, when I started acting, I wasn’t looking for action roles,” he says. “I was of average build, 6’3”, 205 pounds. I wasn’t a big guy, but I did have a fairly athletic build. So, when I started working, my goal as an actor was always to be ready to play more of everyone’s roles” .

Actors often need to find a balance with their size and shape. Too big and you’re typecast as the silent enforcer or the menacing bad guy. Coulter was well aware of these potential setbacks. However, he had a plan in mind.

“When I started working, I knew there was a niche for someone like me who was beautiful, you know, and capable, but could also play bigger guys, play action, because I wanted to diversify my resume. And luckily, when I started researching and thinking about doing action films, I gained some weight, and started working out a little bit more, because I wanted to change it up a little bit. And that’s kind of how I look at it. I try to stay within walking distance of being able to lose a little bit of weight, or gain a little bit of weight, depending on what I’m going to do.”

“Squats and bench presses are really good, because [doing them] It maintains volume, and gives the mass you want,” Coulter. “They’re a great foundation. I found myself doing deadlifts a lot when I was in Puerto Rico, because I needed to bulk up a bit.

“With deadlifts, you get that result faster. I don’t necessarily do deadlifts on a regular basis because no one likes deadlifts unless it’s the only thing they want. I’m not a deadlift type of guy, but I have included it in my workouts and a lot of Cross Workouts and CrossFit Moves with Dumbbells and Kettlebells I’ve been lifting pretty heavy [in prep for the movie]. “

One of the cardio activities I lean on while on the go airplane: sprints on the beach. “It’s a minimal impact on your joints, but it’s a challenge for you because the surface is so uneven,” he says.

Coulter He also shares that his favorite method of working out is using the assault bike for small bursts, which leads to intense cardio sessions that still maintain muscle size.

Coulter admits thatMostly vegetarian. “I’ve been able to live with a lot of plant-based protein,” he shares. “I’m a big believer in intermittent fasting. I try to eat all my food by 8 or 9 in the morning, and then give myself 16 hours until I eat again. It fluctuates because it depends on my schedule.

“When I was training airplane, I found myself eating in the morning because I needed to keep the weight off. I’d wake up and after a workout, have a protein shake, have a little breakfast and follow it up with another meal for lunch, have another protein shake on the way from the group in the evening, before dinner, then he’d stop eating, and repeat. Carbs are good, but it’s just about the type of carbs. You have to watch the sugars.”

“Doing cold immersion treatments, saunas, going to work and then getting enough rest is really essential,” he says. Coulter. It also prioritizes sleep with a purpose 7-8 hours a night whenever possible. “This is the component that most people really can’t do, and that’s getting the right amount of sleep. Since we’re all really busy, sleep is crucial in terms of recovery and getting your gains. A cold plunge is a great mood-booster. It’s intense, and once you’re I don’t, I feel like I start my day with an accomplishment I force myself to do, and when I get out of it, the day becomes more manageable.”

Mike Coulter’s advice for success

“I’ve learned over the years that competition is something you have to have inside of you,” he says. “You can’t compare yourself, your journey, or your career to anyone else… It’s a really individual battle, always with yourself. Because some people are naturally gifted in certain ways, and some people have to work harder in other areas, as long as you kind of keep With these horse coins and you kind of focus on yourself, you’ll get the results you want.”
