While Avatar: The Way Of Water continues to dominate the cinema charts, “Babylon”, the next saga with an XXL runtime and an all-star cast, debuts today in German cinemas and also takes you into an exciting world: Hollywood in the 1920s.
Even after more than four weeks, “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” is a barometer of all things box office hits – both internationally and in Germany. That won’t change much this week either. Pandora’s second adventure just surpassed Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the sixth-highest-grossing movie of all time at $1.928 billion — and people are still flocking to see Jake Sully and company return to cinemas. However, on January 19, a top-tier competition will begin…
“Avatar 2” succeeded as a cinematic sensation: only 3 (!) other films in Germany have achieved this so far
Well, admittedly: The place will be in the sun of the domestic cinema charts „Babylon – ecstasy intoxication“ Perhaps James Cameron’s blockbuster was not in dispute. In the US, the Hollywood saga, which began there before Christmas, has grossed just $15 million. With a staggering $80 million in production costs, this means one of the biggest box office flops in recent history. From a cinematic point of view, on the other hand, one can speak well of competition on an equal footing.
The box office failure is particularly unfortunate because time travel to the absolutely insane glamorous Hollywood of the 1920s, with an outstanding cast both in front of and behind the camera, is one of the highlights of the year, which was visited. For cinema definitely worth it.
“Babylon” has what it takes to become a cult movie
After his musical brilliance of the genius “La La Land,” Damien Chazelle, author of “Whiplash” and “Aufbruch zum Mond,” once again dedicates himself to the hustle and bustle of the film industry, but this time he pushes his audience back into a whole century of the past:
In Hollywood in the 1920s, a revolution looms, and with it a crisis the likes of which cinema has never seen before. Because sound film is so close–and while lavish parties, rampant sex, alcohol, and drugs still live the life of the stars and stars in their grip, silent film greats like Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt) and Nellie LaRue (Margot Robbie) threaten it all with loss.
With his three movies to date, Damien Chazelle, who is just 38 years old, has received a whopping 23 Academy Award nominations, of which he has managed to win 10 — yet “Babylon” is fortunately not great Oscar cinema, but it is an absolutely uninhibited intoxication., as stated in a FILMSTARTS review of the film, among other things. At the end of the day, we gave “A Captivating Spectacle to Watch” 4 out of 5 possible stars and a prophecy for the future: because even if “Babylon” fails at the box office, the odds are very good that it will become a celebrated cult film in 20 years.
Also new in cinemas: Leiden RomCom & Action from India
in „gun wedding“ Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom’s (Josh Duhamel) dream wedding is disrupted when society is suddenly caught off guard – and the phrase “till death do us part” becomes all too important to the couple. Unfortunately, the largely uncreative RomCom variant of Die Hard is really just for die-hard J.Lo fans. We only give it 2 out of 5 stars.
Anyone who has tasted blood in 2022 with the Netflix megahit “RRR” can also look forward to a visually stunning reboot from India. In ‘Pathaan’, superstar Shah Rukh Khan plots revenge against his parents’ killers – and in the process gets to the bottom of a terrorist organisation.
As an insider tip, we can also give you „Revenge in Texas“ By and featuring The Office star BJ Novak. The thriller acts as a suspenseful, funny, witty, and biting new satire as well as a wacky response to the constant true crime podcast.
