The presentation aims to provide policy-level agricultural monitoring and assessments of potential threats to global food security.

Facilitated by the University of Maryland and the University of Strasbourg, the show will combine Planet Earth satellite data and other publicly available datasets with the analytical expertise of a joint NASA Harvest team—creating an assessment tool that can play a key role in anticipating and avoiding foods. shortages and famines.

This was the first job workout To monitor the fields in Ukraine in 2022 to Frontline agricultural track activity f Evaluation of the impact of war on crop production. Iterating this process, and building on NASA Harvest’s existing public sector experience and Planet’s commercial offerings, work is now being expanded to conduct regional and global assessments. The solution will be offered to national governments, multilateral institutions, NGOs and other interested parties around the world.

“The world’s food security is going through a moment of huge uncertainty – not just because of the war in Ukraine, but because of many other serious challenges, particularly those related to climate,” said Andrew Zoli, Planet’s chief impact officer. “From drought in Somalia to floods in Pakistan, the combination of real-time satellite imagery and cutting-edge analytics can shed light on the many types of risks to our global food systems, helping us to adapt agricultural practices, adjust global supply chains, and mitigate risks to our food systems. Poor families and vulnerable communities are exposed to it.”

For decades, the NASA Harvest team has been developing innovative satellite-based technologies for monitoring commodity crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans, and rice. The team also collects and analyzes environmental, economic and social science data to create a complete picture of the outstanding food landscape.

“This effort plays a key role in a broader NASA Harvest initiative to provide rapid agricultural assessments to support policies in the face of food security and market threats,” said Inbal Bekr Rechev, NASA Harvest Program Administrator, referring to the pilot project.

“This level of understanding can greatly benefit other organizations to monitor and predict potential issues in their areas, moving us from research to impact,” Baker-Reshef continued. “It was important to both of our institutions that we make these analyzes more widely available in order to improve decision-making related to agriculture around the world, taking advantage of the unparalleled high spatial and temporal resolution that Planet data provides.”

While this marks the first commercial relationship between Planet and NASA Harvest, the pair has a well-established history of impact and science-related initiatives. Collaboration grew from NASA’s SmallSat Commercial Data Acquisition (CSDA) programunder which Planet has been providing data to NASA scientists and federally funded researchers since 2018. For example, Planet and NASA Harvest have supported the government of Togo in Food security relief efforts related to COVID-19 By creating a cropland map for the entire country, it is delivered within 10 days of receiving the order, allowing the government to quickly mobilize to ensure food security during the global epidemic.
