Sporting KC signs German left-back Tim Leybold

Today, Sporting Kansas City announced the club’s signing of 29-year-old defender Tim Liebold, a veteran left-back who has accumulated more than 20 goals and 40 assists in nearly 300 professional matches in his native Germany.

Leipold, who signed a three-year contract in the MLS until 2025 with an option for 2026, will have an international place on Sporting’s roster, pending receipt of his international transfer certificate and P1 visa. Leipold will join Sporting after spending the last eight seasons in Germany’s two biggest divisions. He starred at Nurnberg from 2015-2019 – helping the club to promotion to the Bundesliga in 2018 – and has since competed with Hamburg, including one year as club captain during the 2020-21 season.

A dynamic left-back with an attacking flair, Leopold developed in the youth academies of VfB Stuttgart, TSF Detzingen and SGV Freiberg before turning professional with Freiburg at the age of 18 in 2012. He scored five goals and four assists in his only season with the club. to join VfB Stuttgart II, where he started 54 matches over two years in the German third tier.

Leipold enjoyed a breakthrough in 2015 by joining Bundesliga 2 team Nuremberg and cementing his place as a regular starter. He scored four goals and set up two in his first season at Nurnburg, with the club narrowly missing out on promotion to the Bundesliga with a 2–1 aggregate loss against Eintracht Frankfurt in a promotion-relegation play-off. Leipold missed most of the following season due to injury but rebounded in the 2017-18 season with four goals and three assists in 32 games as Nuremberg secured promotion to the Bundesliga with a second-place finish in the league.

The 2018-19 season saw Leipold lead Nuremberg with 32 starts in the Bundesliga while also assisting on three goals. Competing in one of the top leagues in the world, he led the team in passes, tackles, recoveries, and touchdowns while finishing second in minutes played.

Leipold then returned to the second Bundesliga by moving from Nuremberg to Hamburg, where he spent his best professional season to date in 2019-20. He played every minute in all 34 league matches and led the 2. Bundesliga with 16 assists, including two assists in wins over Dynamo Dresden and former club Nürnberg. Wearing the captain’s armband at Hamburger SV in 2020-21, Leipold had another impressive season with four goals and four assists in 29 league starts as the club finished fourth for the second year in a row.

Leipold has started 15 of 17 matches for Hamburg over the past two seasons, including cup victories over Nuremberg and Eintracht Braunschweig at the 2021-22 DFB-Pokal.

At international level, Leipold made five appearances for the Germany U-20 national team in 2013, including shutout victories over Turkey, the Netherlands and Poland.
