After a week and over $2.6 million, Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 is over. The speed marathon ran January 8-15 and you can watch the wonderfully produced live stream around the clock. Donations and proceeds received during this time will be credited to the Prevent Cancer Foundation as usual.
Instead of meeting offline — as in the Done Quick 2022 Summer Games — the AGDQ 2023 contestants were once again only available via teleconference. As always, this did not detract from the quality of the offerings on offer. We picked eight favorites from all the games on display, which make a good introduction to the event’s VODs.
Mirror Edge Catalyst
New game + at 53:01 from CodeNameMeteor
The first segment of Mirror’s Edge has been a favorite of the fast sprinters from the start. no wonder. After all, the way to play parkour is based on getting from A to B as quickly as possible. However, in AGDQ, CodeNameMeteor introduced the second part of the string. Although it hasn’t had the same success as its predecessor, it doesn’t make fast runners any less excited.
The commentary on this run is very detailed and gives viewers an insight into the techniques used.

Any % Warpless at 52:24 von mitchflowerpower
The end of the marathon was the Super Mario race. Bros 3. This time in the Warpless category and played by an expert at his craft: mitchflowerpower even had a cameo appearance on The Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert.
One of the benefits of Mitch being able to run runs from his own setup was that he could use a tackle technique that was very cumbersome on the field and only had a 1% chance of working.
Mitch was historically one of Red Bull’s greatest sprint GrandPOOBear competitors. Because Super Mario Bros. 3 was the first game GPB took seriously as a fast-paced racing game.
Any% at 12:40 von ChairGTables
If you need a big boost of energy, you should check out this fast racing SNK Classic Metal Slug. Runner ChairGTables gives the viewer such a level of power that it feels like you’ve played the sprint yourself.
Even if the run becomes almost chaotic in places due to the energetic nature of the chair, you can still get enough information to understand the technical details. A wild ride of 12 minutes and 40 seconds, which is also the perfect length.
Old and young alike discuss the importance of Japan’s vibrant and thriving arcade scene.
Any% at 37:36 by Blaidan
One of the big indie releases of 2022 was the platform shooter Neon White. A game that is already perfectly designed for fast running in its basic design. So it’s no wonder that the community has quickly established itself here.
Blaidan shows us a class based purely on gameplay. So it is a fast racing game full of thrilling overtakes and a lot of clever use of game mechanics. Neon White also provides a good start for sprint beginners if you want to get a taste of the hobby for yourself.
Besides the quick races, Games Done Quick is always a great place to see particularly technical game demos. For example, Tetris: The Grand Master has been featured here in the past.
This time we get a glimpse of StepMania on a high level. StepMania is a fan version of the dance game Dance Dance Revolution and thus offers the same console support as its arcade counterpart.
While the demo presents the game with full physical exertion, the spectators get information about the game and its subtle mechanics from the sidelines. As always, a great look at a more specialized gaming landscape.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4
All goals at 38:05 by Nas
Skateboard games have been increasingly going the simulation route in recent years. Of course there are still exceptions like OlliOllie World, but the big titles in this genre are things like Sessions or Skater XL.
Even the highly successful version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 couldn’t change that. Although there has been an attempt to release Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, unfortunately this is not going to happen.
If you still want to remember, you can watch Nase complete all the objectives in the fourth part of the snowboarding game.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
ie% at 17:57 von Elfinout
Mortal Kombat is now the best-selling franchise in the fighting game genre for the general gamer community and is doing a good job of breaking out of the hardcore scene.
But Mortal Kombat had a pop culture high in the ’90s. Spin-offs such as Shaolin Monks have also appeared here. A 2D scroller game that can be played cooperatively.
Commentary for this speedrun comes from PND Ketchup, who also serves as editor for the main Tekken and Mortal Kombat tournaments. This gives Elfinout professional support from abroad.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
CoopRife at 1:00:23 by General Andrews, Dupostman, Benja, and Paul Skakin
And speaking of co-op games: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is, of course, a perfect representative of the genre. Beat ’em Up was released last year and showed once again that there is still a place for the video game genre in today’s world.
The AGDQ 2023 sprint also shows exactly this kind of gameplay. It is a race between two teams, each team consisting of two players. An important part of the strategy is to provoke opponents. This fills the bar required to perform super attacks.
