Why does Arsenal wear red shirts and what is the history behind it?

Manchester United returned to defeat Manchester City in controversial fashion in the dramatic Manchester derby.

It is clear that Manchester United, very unexpectedly, are in the Premier League title race.

Complete rematch

Jack Grealish put City ahead after jumping off the bench but goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford eventually sealed victory for United. Fernandes’ equalizer was highly controversial as Rashford stood in an offside position and although he didn’t touch the ball it clearly seemed to affect play.

The Red Devils have now won nine consecutive matches in all competitions and five consecutive matches in the Premier League. They have 38 points, one behind second-placed Manchester City and six behind leaders Arsenal.

Erik ten Hag’s side are in this title race, while champions Pep Guardiola lost two games on the bounce to crash out of the League Cup and are now undefeated in the Manchester derby. They just don’t look like themselves.

Offside drama where the Red Devils stick to their game plan, and come back

Look, according to the letter of the law, Marcus Rashford may technically be in the side, but there is no way he hasn’t affected the positioning of Manuel Akanji and City goalkeeper Ederson. The fact that Rashford ran towards goal with the ball basically under his feet definitely interfered with the play and affected the positions of the others. However, United’s game plan was excellent against City and totally fooled the reigning champions. Fred was superb as an extra man in midfield as he and Casemiro shut down De Bruyne and Bruno clipped long balls over the top for Rashford to run on. The whole United team stuck to the plan and Erik ten Hag got the subs right as Anthony and Garnacho added an extra trick on the counter in the second half. United are solid defensively and in incredible shape. They are certainly in this race for the title now.

Erik ten Hag praises Manchester United’s ‘tremendous’ spirit

Speaking to BT Sport, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag praised his team spirit in their return win.

“We played well in the first half. We defended well and took good chances. We were really happy at half-time. After half-time we had to play Martial, he had some complaints, and the game changed. City came in, we weren’t proactive. They scored. The team spirit is huge.” Very, there is a belief that the game is 90 minutes long and we can resist. I am really happy with the team’s performance… Faith is back and we are in a good direction. You have to operate outside of possession [against teams like City]. They have qualities in separate moments to score goals. We saw that today. One mistake and they scored.

Bruno Fernandes: “We used to be individuals… but now we’re a team”

United’s Portuguese playmaker also spoke to BT Sport and praised the collective unity as he said they were now a “proper team” working together. This looks a little different even from the big wins and performances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United still have a lot in the tank and Erik ten Hag has pushed everyone in the right direction.

The stars of the show

Marcus Rashford: He got behind a lot and scored again. Such a threat and in the form of his life.

CasemiroDominant in midfield as he and Fred shut down Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. He is the heart of this team. Big block on Haaland in the first half.

RodriHe put in a fine performance to help City take control of the game early in the second half. Somehow still underrated.

full time – A big win for Manchester United as they fought to beat Manchester City 2-1. But everyone will talk about that equalizer. This is the official ruling from FIFA.

Late on United have held on to some brilliant defenders from Lisandro Martinez and others.

GOALLLL! Marcus Rashford turns home after a fine piece of work from Garnacho down the left.

GOALLLL! And a huge controversy. Marcus Rashford was flagged for offside and Bruno Fernandes’ goal didn’t hold, but VAR was used and he’s up. This is controversial. Rashford was clearly offside and affected the play, but did not touch the ball.

United didn’t really respond to being late. The city is shifting through gears now and playing soccer. They are in their element.

Just Sammy from Kevin de Bruyne and look at Grealish’s hunger to get up and go home. Can United respond?

Phil Foden is off, Jack Grealish is on. A frustrating outing for an ex. He felt like he was a hacker most of the time trying to get involved in the attacks.

chance! Varane was found at the back post but urged his effort wide. Great opportunity for United. At the other end, Phil Foden falls in the penalty area under pressure from Casemiro, but this is not a penalty kick.

Anthony in the first half, but Anthony Martial, not Rashford. The latter got rid of this hip problem. Anthony plays up front centrally.

half the time: Man United 0-0 Man City – United looked good on the counter and City didn’t have many clear chances. A tense, but interesting, first half in the Manchester derby.

Rashford is now back but Anthony is warming up and has a quiet word with Erik ten Hag. He wouldn’t be surprised to see him come on in the first half.

chance! Rashford enters again but Ederson comes out and chokes his shot. United are far behind Walker.

chance! The ball over the top sees Ederson lunge out but Rashford hits him with it and rounds him. His cross was blocked and then crossed but Ederson’s header was saved. Direct and decisive attack from United.

Lots of ball for City but they don’t do much with it. De Bruyne and Haaland seem to have changed positions for some time.

chance! After some patience, City played, you find Haaland in the penalty area, but Casemiro rushes in with a good barrier. Better than City. It’s like a lot of them.

Cancelo clears after United plays a long ball over the top and gets a cross into the box. Their plan works.

Wide! Bruno Fernandes pulls an effort wide of the far post after some great passing. United settle into the match.

Not many chances yet but City control the ball and United are happy to sit back and play straight. Curiosity tactical battle. Pep and ETH open their eyes wide and look worried on the sidelines. This will be a tight and tense game.

Starting! We’re in the process and it allows City to have a lot of the ball early on.

For United, Luke Shaw starts at centre-back with Tyrell Malacia at left-back, while Fred starts alongside Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in midfield.

As for City, they made eight changes to the side that lost at Southampton in midweek as Haaland and De Bruyne were tasked with opening up that suddenly too scarce United defence. Akanji and Ake at centre-back have a huge task to stop Rashford and Martial.

Hello and welcome! It’s Manchester Derby day and Old Trafford is rocking. The team news is interesting, so let’s get it all straight.

Major storylines

United build momentum and Marcus Rashford takes the helm. He’s scored seven goals in his last six games for the Red Devils and looks unstoppable at this stage. Pep Guardiola and Man City have not looked the same before and after the World Cup break and they will be a little anxious ahead of this encounter. They have struggled against United in derbies in recent years but that has not been the case Earlier this season when they won 6-3. Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne tore United apart in October and City will hope the duo can link up and be able to control the tempo of this game, particularly in midfield.
