He was the lyricist of Hogan’s golden era in WWE. Now Lanny Poffo, the “macho” brother, has died suddenly.

His death hit the wrestling world unexpectedly.

Lanny Poffo, son of Angelo Poffo and brother of “Macho Man” Randy Savage, died Thursday.

He was born in Canada and was 68 years old. Nothing is known about the circumstances of death.

Fans in Germany have known Poffo primarily from his role in WWE as “The Genius”. With his little verses, he teased wrestling fans in the early 1990s.

In WWE: From Leaping Lanny to Genius

Before becoming a genius, the then World Wrestling Federation had used him as “Leaping Lanny” since 1985. Poffo was never more than an uncommon talent. However, by the standards of the time, he was one of the most athletic players on the team.

As the highly intelligent and arrogant villain “The Genius”, he first appeared in his dazzling cape in the spring of 1989.

Between 1989 and 1990, Genius was a rival for crowd attraction Hulk Hogan and faced Hulkster, who was then the holder of the WWE Championship, on Saturday Night’s Main Event on November 25. Genius and Mr. Perfect worked together here. However, both men were not serious contenders for the title at this point. Instead, this storyline was a transition prior to Hogan Warrior’s WrestleMania VI program.

It all began for Poffo in 1974

Poffo returned to wrestling in 1974. He fought in the early days alongside his father, Angelo, among others. Then Laney came to the World Wrestling Federation across different territories, which had committed his brother “Macho Man” Randy Savage.

Poffo remained under contract with WWE until the summer of 1992, most recently as manager of the Beverly Brothers.

Between 1995 and 1999 he had a contract with World Championship Wrestling, although he rarely appeared here. A family connection—Randy Savage was a superstar in the promotion at the time—certainly helped cut his paycheck in WCW.

In 2015, Laney returned to the WWE stage and addressed his brother Randy Savage in the Hall of Fame. Savage was killed in a car accident in 2011 as a result of a heart attack.

Poffo was a frequent guest in Germany

Poffo has also been a regular at independent events and conferences over the past few years. He has repeatedly come to Germany for DWA.

Just this past November, the former WWF personality appeared in Germany at an event in Delmenhorst.

While “The Genius” was never one of the greatest figures of the federation’s golden age, he was one that made wrestling special for many fans during that era.
